Water Rights
Nevada is the most arid state in the nation, with an average total precipitation of only 9 inches per year. Water resources are in heavy demand from agricultural, municipal and industrial users. Approximately 60% of the state’s water comes from surface sources while some areas of Nevada rely solely on ground water supplies. Because water is limited, the Nevada Division of Water Resources regulates the appropriation and use of both ground and surface water rights. In order to obtain water for agricultural, municipal or industrial uses, water rights must be applied for and the beneficial use proven in order to receive a permit.

Water Quality
With limited water availability, water quality is an important issue in Nevada. Surface and ground water can be contaminated by a variety of sources such as agricultural runoff, erosion, and municipal and industrial discharges.
