Recommendations and Specifications for Revegetation Treatments

These guidelines are provided as overall recommendations, however, site-specific refinement of the recommendations by a professional such as NRCS will provide even greater assurance for success.

Revegetation Specifications for Zone 1

Zone 1 is characterized by plateaus and loamy slopes of 4 to 50 percent. The natural vegetation is dominated by mountain big sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, Thurber needlegrass, western wheatgrass, squirreltail, arrowleaf balsamroot, penstemon, lupine, and a variety of other forbs/ shrubs, and grasses. Pinyon-juniper woodlands also occur on slopes of 30 to 50 percent with northerly aspects.

*Species marked with an asterisk are nonnative plants, but have been included because of their ability to establish and endure a variety of site conditions. In addition, they are recognized for fire retarding qualities. They are palatable to feral horses and some wildlife in the area.

Revegetation Specifications for Zone 2

The soils of this zone include loamy slope soils, and soils that are shallow to very shallow and well drained. Some soils have over 50 percent gravels, cobbles, or stones, and are moderately deep with heavy textured subsoils or claypans. These soils can occur on manyaspects, and plateaus throughout the Zone. Precipitation averages from 10 to 14 inches per year. Singleleaf pinyon woodlands also exist along primarily northerly aspects with slopes ranging from 4 to 50 percent. Mountain big sage, antelope bitterbrush, Thurber needlegrass, western wheatgrass, squirreltail, arrowleaf balsamroot, penstemon, lupine, and a variety of other forbs/ shrubs and grasses make up the natural vegetation. On the claypan soils the major vegetation includes low sagebrush, Thurber needlegrass, Sandberg bluegrass, lupine, and Utah juniper.

Revegetation Specifications for Zone 3

The soils of this zone include loamy slope soils, rock outcrops, gravelly claysand soils that are shallow to very shallow and well drained. Some soils have over 50 percent gravels, cobbles, or stones. Precipitation averages from 10 to12 inches per year. Pinyon-juniper woodlands exist primarily along northerly aspects with slopes ranging from 4 to 50 percent. The trees generally appear in a savannah-type arrangement with a shrub understory. The distance between trees is possibly more a result of marginal conditions conducive to active tree encroachment, than other factors. The area is primarily dominated by shrub species. Mountain big sage, antelope bitterbrush, Thurber needlegrass, western wheatgrass, squirreltail, arrowleaf balsamroot, penstemon, lupine, and a variety of other forbs/shrubs and grasses dominate the natural vegetation. On the claypan soils the major vegetation includes low sagebrush, Thurber needlegrass, Sandberg bluegrass, lupine, and Utah juniper.

Revegetation Specifications for Zone 4

Zone 4 includes gravelly claysand shallow medium textured soils with up to 60% inclusions of gravels, cobbles, and stones. Precipitation averages from 10 to 12 inches per year. Singleleaf pinyon woodlands occur here, but not in abundance, and primarily along northerly aspects with slopes ranging from 4 to 50 percent. The trees generally appear in a savannah-type arrangement with a shrub understory. Under ideal conditions the natural vegetation would consist of Lahontan sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, Thurber needlegrass, squirreltail, Indian ricegrass, arrowleaf balsamroot, lupine, and a variety of other forbs/ shrubs and grasses. On the claypan soils the major vegetation includes low sagebrush, Thurber needlegrass, Sandberg bluegrass, lupine, and Utah juniper.
